Memoir in particular seems to invite hybrid forms. When we’re writing into difficult or tender material, weaving in other genres, whether it’s travelogue, history, or even myth, can offer just enough distance to be protective, while still allowing the emotional truth to come through. Some of the most powerful memoirs I’ve read have done this brilliantly, and I think it’s part of what makes the form so endlessly alive.
Love books that defy easy categories! I write books like this, too. They’re the only kind that interest me, often.
