I loved this so much! Living in NYC was a dream I got to experience for 7 years and it really is amazing. This brought back so many great memories, from Chelsea to Central Park to Gray's Papaya hot dogs. I adored Whoopi back in San Diego when I was a starry-eyed theater kid and I still do. Merry Xmas!
Ms. Goldberg--I was also born at St. Vincent's Hospital--but in Billings, Montana! My wife and I were born a month apart--delivered by the same doc--Dr. Chapple--in 1949. We eventually met each other as freshmen in college right here in Billings in 1967. Got married soon after--3 kids and 6 grandkids--and a new great grandaughter! We lost my wife ten years ago to alzheimers.
As a life long NYer, I love hearing about Whoopi's experience. I was born in '89 but Coney Island was also a favorite place to go to and so was The Bronx Zoo
I lived in NYC in the mid-60s. Thalia Theatre. A new foreign film a day. And the most fascinating people on earth outside on Broadway. An education and a half! Thanks, Whoopi, and Merry Christmas.
We’re about to tuck into a breakfast box from Utopia Bagels, in Queens, sent by our Brooklynite son. We’ll be eating those memories this Christmas morning! Thanks for this evocation of the Big 🍎 .
Beautiful. I have always loved New York every time I’ve spent time there and thought for a long time I would live there for a few years someday. This seems less likely now. But who knows? At any rate, I will certainly visit again. And I loved this excerpt from a woman whose work I admire.
If NYC ever needs a kick ass advertising campaign, Whoopi should head it up. Her high energy enthusiasm for the city she grew up in is infectious-- but as a visitor to NYC in the 90s my memories were not so great. I shattered my heel after jumping from a boulder in Central Park (I know --what?) and I had a frightening experience when I got off the subway at the wrong station after walking out of CATS-- but then a couple of years ago, my daughter moved there and when I visited her, we saw Waitress with Sara Bareilles --just amazing-- a really good time in NYC that I'll never forget.
Enjoyed thi remembering 1975-on visits to NYC--changes now, but the loverly grit stays in the memory banks of flying in to get independent features on screens and almost any bare wall (or better; @ the Angelia/IFP Market! Thanks!
A testament to good parenting, and many shared memories of NYC .

I have never been to NYC and now I want to go!
Loved this. I remember that blue and Orange of the 1964 fair — and the Mets! 🧡 💙

Exciting! What memories and a great childhood in NYC.
I love this! And I don't even like New York! Love the perspective, tho. Especially from Whoopi.
“Please. I’m from Chelsea.”
Love this line. NYC is any place and every place.

Like a love letter. Just wonderful!
"I really do try to be the person they hoped I would be." Love this whole essay. Whoopee for Whoopi and NYC!
