In plain English, what is a "vertical"?

It's a themed sub-publication within a publication.

Thanks for the explanation... I've been wondering about that too. So they aren't separate Substacks, they are themes within a Substack, is that right?

Maybe the word usage is from typeset days, where vertical typeset columns would be used in print publications. Today, it's an anachronism!
