I definitely want to read Invisible Labor-- I can't imagine how painful that must have been! I'm so interested in the research about c-sections overall too, because I had to have one with my first, then chose to have them with the next two. Thanks for writing about this important topic!
Thank you for the inspiration of this interview...for all the hard aspects of writing memoir and telling complicated stories. I also loved the perspective on parenting and writing and the need to move. I often return from a walk with clear insight on a scene or theme I'm struggling with.
I also had a difficult first childbirth that led to me having a c-section with my second child. The c-section was the less traumatic of the two for me, but neither birth went as planned. I was 35, with a PhD, a professor at a medical school, and was still traumatized by child birth. It can happen to anyone. Thank you for writing about your experience.
Fantastic read. Thank you for the information here. The time has come. Not that I think every tidbit of outlives be speeded out, but we must push the barriers of what need be concealed with what is necessary to expose. Brilliant! Every generation has something they are called upon to expose, the time has come that we listen, without judgement nor competitive comparison. That you
Thank you for a very informative interview about reportage and its intersection with memoir. Memoir is changing so much these days and there’s so much we can be informed about that people need to know. I look forward to reading this book.
I am very keen to read the Substack Rachel releases, about her next work.. can you please announce it when the time comes to publish? Also, downloaded this memoir. It sounds really fascinating, and such an important subject to bring to the light 🤓
I concur....the time has arrived for a new genre: reported-historical memoir.
Glad to have this book come to my attention, Sari. Congrats to the new author!

Thank you!
Just ordered the book and look forward to reading it. The medicalization of birth which began in the early 1900s is both fascinating and horrifying.

I'm sorry you had a difficult birth experience, and, you are totally right--it can happen to anyone.
So hear you on needing to move!
