Hi Stephanie. I am so glad I read this. Every word. I feel elevated by your story and that's the only reason I read anything. All the way down to learning that horses can hear your heartbeat four feet away. I think that's what happens when we write to one another: we hear each other's heartbeats. Glad you found Substack and Sari Botton. We're not Netflix. Nobody's appropriating anything here. A safe zone, like your barn.

Freaking awesome, both of you! Great questions, Sari. And Stephanie ... you inspire in so many ways. Your answer about the power of writing to create change, especially the bit about empathy and compassion--YES! Aspiring memoirist, here, bows with thanks.

Fantastic interview, Sari and Stephanie. Stephanie, I’ve been inspired by your success since your Vox essay and wish you all the best. And I have two words for you: Aqua Notes. A writer pal bought them for me after I published a poem (my only poem; I write mostly CNF) about words and paragraphs sliding off me in the shower. I use my Aqua Notes all the time.

Omg, is this real? Googling...

Every so often I hear a clatter in my shower in the middle of the night when the suction cups on the notepad release. It's unreal how many ideas I get in the shower.

What if your story is too painful to tell? as mine is

I think you'd be surprised by the number of lives you'd touch by your story. No one is ever "the only one" even if it feels that way. We validate and empower others and ourselves by telling our hard stories. Your story needs to be told.
