This sounds like the IFS work I've done in therapy (but which got interrupted). I need to get back to that. (And years before, I scoffed at the term "inner child" that was so popular at the time, so I can relate to that resistance!) I'm eager to read your book.
I am new to inner child work (IFS) and I love learning from this essay, especially in the idea of an open-ended exchange between the original child and the adult, that back and forth, that mutual healing. Thank you!
"The original child has been introduced, over and over, to a caring adult version of me." This sounds like deeply meaningful work. I think my child needed a lot more loving than she got. I need to read this essay several times again.

thanks, and yes, going heavy on the IFS is a good strategy!
You invite me to be brave. “If not now, when?”, I hear in my gut. Thanks, y’all.
now's a good time for everything. but then again, i find i stumble into self-knowledge at my own pace and "readiness"
