This is so incredibly beautiful. I wish I could have worn mourning clothes when my mom and sister passed so people would have recognized that I was not in my right mind. What a gorgeous and necessary tradition.

I felt this deeply. Having lost my mom in Nov. 2022, I wish mourning was recognized in my community. One of the assistant principals at the school where I worked lost her mom around the same time. On Mother’s Day the following year, our first without our mothers, this coworker wrote me a note telling me she understood my pain and validated this difficult time. I, too, felt seen and loved. Thank you for this article. It was much needed.

Very beautiful and touching piece on grief and community. Also a good reminder to say yes, and yes do we need to be reminded of mourning rituals. Thank you!
